PROJECT OUTLINE

Project Outline: mapping a line through two cities: Lahore and London.

We imagine the line as a slice that cuts through buildings and across streets. The line can be traced round the world but we will map one mile of it in Lahore an one in London. Only those parts of Lahore/London through which the line passes can be used. The slice could be taken literally and/or can be seen in any direction in terms of how it re-imagines the section of city that it intersects.

Rules:

-The sectional line is given by the curators.

-A group of eight artists from Lahore and eight from London are to make an imaginative response to a section of their home city based on a line drawn on a map.

-The line can be taken literally, physically, politically, historically. But certain areas of the work should connect it to the present site through which the line cuts.

-We imagine the line as a slice that cuts through buildings and across streets. Only those parts of Lahore/London through which the line passes can be used.

-The slice can be divided between the participating artists. How the line is divided can be negotiated between the artists but the curators will have the final say.

- Each final piece – whether it’s an image, video, sound, text or another form – will have to fit in a pre-determined area (details to be given at the preliminary meeting), and be designed to be experienced on a screen.

-This will initially be an electronically curated project. Each artist will have a thumbnail image on the home-page of the Slice web-site that can be clicked to open their artwork. It is envisaged that at a later stage the digital works will also be displayed in galleries on or near the mapped areas.

-Artists in the two cities will meet at the same time on agreed dates (see draft schedule) to visit their sections of the slice, connect with colleagues by Skype, and develop their work.
